Same the Florida Manatee! 2002-07-02, 3:10 p.m. From the Florida PIRG network: Manatees are being killed at near record breaking rates this year and are facing a very uncertain future. Manatees are in dire need of expanded protections, and now is the time to speak up to help protect this most precious of endangered species. The Florida Fish and Wildlife and Conservation Commission (FWCC) is currently accepting public comments for their review of new boat speed zones and manatee safe havens. Save the Manatee Club, Florida PIRG and a coalition of environmental and animal welfare organizations have submitted science-based recommendations that are opposed by some in the marine industry and other high speed boating interests. The best way concerned Floridians can help is by urging the FWCC to adopt the Florida PIRG-endorsed Save the Manatee Club recommendations. BACKGROUND The state of Florida is required to review additional areas for new boat speed zones and areas for manatee safe havens as part of the lawsuit settlement with Save the Manatee Club, Florida PIRG, and a coalition of environmental and animal protection groups. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWCC) held numerous public workshops around the state presenting preliminary protection measures. Save the Manatee Club and other manatee advocates attended each meeting and, where needed, recommended stronger protection measures than the FWCC proposed. Unfortunately, the Marine Industries Association, their allies in government and other well moneyed, high speed boating interests are working hard to rewrite and undermine existing laws and derail any attempts to expand manatee protection in Florida.
