Save America's Groupers! 2002-07-30, 4:03 p.m. Dear Friends: I and 280 other concerned people have signed onto ReefGuardian International's email Petition to Save America's Groupers from being driven to the brink of extinction. I hope you will do the same. We need to BREAK THROUGH the 500 sign-on barrier to get the regulators to take us seriously. Of the 15 managed grouper species in the U.S. Caribbean, South Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico, TEN have been designated "vulnerable to extinction" by the American Fisheries Society. Goliath grouper (formerly jewfish)and Nassau grouper stocks show few signs of recovery after years of supposed "rebuilding." Gulf of Mexico male gag groupers are down to 1% of the population. And grouper catches continue to plummet dramatically in the U.S. Caribbean. The numbers of groupers being taken has got to be reduced. And you can help make it happen.
