Demand Fair Hearings on Iraq
2002-07-30, 2:48 p.m.

National Call - In Day for Fair Hearings on Iraq

Call Congress on Tuesday, July 30th

Snap hearings on the impending US invasion of Iraq have been called for Wednesday and Thursday. Sen. Joseph Biden (D-DE) and Jesse Helms (R-NC) have currently invited only pro-war witnesses to speak. Don't let them stack the deck!

If you live in CA, CT, DE, FL, IN, KS, MA, MD, MN, NC, NE, NJ, OR, RI, TN, VA, WI, WV or WY, that means your Senator is on the Foreign Relations Committee, in which case please contact your Senator directly (see contact info below).

If you do not live in one of these key states, please call family and friends who do and ask them to call their Senator on the Foreign Relations Committee.

Urge your Senator to include witnesses who OPPOSE this war on Iraq. The following officials oppose the war, but are not being invited to speak.

Scott Ritter: former chief UN weapons inspector in Iraq (resigned in

protest, 1998)

Dennis Halliday: former UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Iraq (1997-98, resigned

in protest)

Hans Von Sponeck: former UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Iraq (1998-00,

resigned in protest)

Why did they all quit? Apparently Congress doesn't want to know.

When you call your Senator's office, ask to speak with the Foreign Policy staffer (names given on the list below).

A list of expert witnesses can also be faxed directly to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee at (202) 228-1612, to the attention of Puneet Talwar. Expert witnesses, in addition to the three listed above, are:

Edward Peck - Former Ambassador to Iraq

Tun Myat - Former U.N. Humanitarian Coordinator in Iraq (2000-2002)

Richard Falk - Princeton University Professor of International Law

Laith Kubba - Iraqi intellectual, National Endowment for Democracy

Louis Fisher, PhD - Author and War Powers Expert, Congressional Research

Service

You can also call C-SPAN and ask them to broadcast the hearings: (202) 737-3220,

or e-mail them at: [email protected]
