Demand Fair Hearings on Iraq 2002-07-30, 2:48 p.m. National Call - In Day for Fair Hearings on Iraq Call Congress on Tuesday, July 30th Snap hearings on the impending US invasion of Iraq have been called for Wednesday and Thursday. Sen. Joseph Biden (D-DE) and Jesse Helms (R-NC) have currently invited only pro-war witnesses to speak. Don't let them stack the deck! If you live in CA, CT, DE, FL, IN, KS, MA, MD, MN, NC, NE, NJ, OR, RI, TN, VA, WI, WV or WY, that means your Senator is on the Foreign Relations Committee, in which case please contact your Senator directly (see contact info below). If you do not live in one of these key states, please call family and friends who do and ask them to call their Senator on the Foreign Relations Committee. Urge your Senator to include witnesses who OPPOSE this war on Iraq. The following officials oppose the war, but are not being invited to speak. Scott Ritter: former chief UN weapons inspector in Iraq (resigned in protest, 1998) Dennis Halliday: former UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Iraq (1997-98, resigned in protest) Hans Von Sponeck: former UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Iraq (1998-00, resigned in protest) Why did they all quit? Apparently Congress doesn't want to know. When you call your Senator's office, ask to speak with the Foreign Policy staffer (names given on the list below). A list of expert witnesses can also be faxed directly to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee at (202) 228-1612, to the attention of Puneet Talwar. Expert witnesses, in addition to the three listed above, are: Edward Peck - Former Ambassador to Iraq Tun Myat - Former U.N. Humanitarian Coordinator in Iraq (2000-2002) Richard Falk - Princeton University Professor of International Law Laith Kubba - Iraqi intellectual, National Endowment for Democracy Louis Fisher, PhD - Author and War Powers Expert, Congressional Research Service You can also call C-SPAN and ask them to broadcast the hearings: (202) 737-3220, or e-mail them at: [email protected] MEMBERS OF THE SENATE FOREIGN RELATIONS COMMITTEE State Senator Phone Number CALIFORNIA: Barbara Boxer (D) (202) 224-3553 (DC office) (FPS) Sean Moore fax: 415-956-6701 (San Francisco Office) CONNECTICUT: Christopher Dodd (D) (202) 224-2823 (FPS) Janice O'Connell fax: 202-224-1083 FLORIDA: Bill Nelson (D) (202) 224-5274 (FPS) Pete Contostavlos fax: 202-224-2183 I INDIANA: Richard Lugar (R) (202) 224-4814 (FPS) Ken Myers fax: 202-228-0360 KANSAS: Sam Brownback (R) (202) 224-6521 (FPS) Jay Wolff fax: 202-228-1265 MASSACHUSETTS: John Kerry (D) (202) 224-2742 (FPS) Kate Rhudy fax: 202-224-8525 MARYLAND: Paul Sarbanes (D) (202) 224-4524 (FPS) Joanne Berry fax: 202-224-1651 MINNESOTA: Paul Wellstone (D) (202) 224-5641 (FPS) Charlotte Oldham-Moore fax: 202-224-8438 NEBRASKA: Chuck Hagel (R) (202) 224-4224 (FPS) Melissa Allen fax: 202-224-5213 NEW JERSEY: Robert Torricelli (D) (202) 224-3224 (FPS) John Bradshaw fax: 202-224-8567 OREGON: Gordon Smith (R) (202) 224-3753 (FPS) James Nelson fax: 202-228-3997 RHODE ISLAND: Lincoln Chafee (R) (202) 224-2921 (FPS) John Seggerman fax: 202-228-2853 TENNESSEE: Bill Frist (R) (202) 224-4944 (FPS) Andy Olson fax: 202-228-1264 VIRGINIA: George Allen (R) (202) 224-4024 (FPS) Brent Perry fax: 202-224-5432 WISCONSIN: Russ Feingold (D) (202) 224-5323 (FPS) Michelle Gavin fax: 202-224-2725 WEST VIRGINIA: John Rockefeller (D) (202) 224-6472 (FPS) Drew Quinn fax: 202-224-7665 WYOMING: Michael Enzi (R) (202) 224-3424 (FPS) Wendy Gnehm fax: 202-228-0359
